Chapter 1 - How to be a Virtuous Man


子曰：人不知而不愠，不亦君子乎！

孔子说：即使别人不了解他，他也不会不高兴的，那不就是君子吗！

Confucious said : Even though nobody understands him, he will not feel unhappy. Isn't that a superior man!




有子曰：其为人也孝弟，而好犯上者，鲜矣；不好犯上，而好作乱者，未之有也。孝弟也者，其为仁之本于！

有子说：如果一个人孝顺他的父母，尊敬他的兄长，是很少会触犯他的上级的。如果一个人不触犯他的上级是从不会为社会带来混乱的。所以说孝顺父母和尊敬兄长实在是达到仁道的基本条件啊！

You Zi said : If a man treats his parents with filial duty and respects his elder brothers, he will seldom offend his superior. If a man does not offend his superiors, he will never disturb peace and order in the society. Therefore, treating parents with filial duty and respecting elder brothers should be the initial requirements of benevolence!

子曰：巧言令色，鲜矣仁！

孔子说：说过分恭维的话语及呈现过分恭维脸色的人，是很少有仁德的！

Confucious said: Saying flattering words and showing flattering manners are seldom associated with virtue!
